Small Block Modifieds Sizzle at Ohsweken Speedway This Friday!

by Tommy Goudge (August 6, 2008) -
More exciting Modified racing is coming up at the Ohsweken Speedway when ESSO and Speedway Variety present the return of the Lucas Oil 358 Modified Shootout Series this Friday night, August 8! Joining the Small Block Modifieds and their 50 lap feature will be the ESSO Thunder Stocks running Twin 15 lap features this week, plus the always exciting ESSO Mini Stocks, and Friday Night Fun Stocks.

This season marks the 3rd year in a row that the 358 Modified Shootout Series has made a stop at Ohsweken, and this year two familiar names are tied at the top of the series standings heading into Friday night. Chad Brachmann and Pete Bicknell both have yet to finish outside the top 5 in any of the 4 series races run so far this season, and each has collected 1 victory. In last year's event at Ohsweken, Bicknell found victory lane with Brachmann settling for 2nd, while in 2006, Brachmann finished 2nd to Adam Ferri, with Bicknell right behind them in 3rd place. Rounding out the top 5 in the series standings are Robbie Krull, Boyd MacTavish, and Travis Braun tied with Todd Gordon for 5th.

The ESSO Thunder Stocks division has become a must-see portion of the Friday Night Thunder show lately, with large fields and incredibly close racing. This week the Thunder Stocks are sure to put on a great show as they will contest Twin 15 lap features, with the starting order for the 2nd feature inverted from the finish of the 1st feature. Cody McPherson took the feature win again last Friday and continues to lead the Thunder Stock points standings, while Ryan Dinning, Terry Osmond, Glen Leinen, and Brian Pescetti fight it out for 2nd. Some new visitors have made their presence known lately, as Merrittville regulars Billy Bleich, Jason Fontaine, and Mike Ward all found their way into the top 5 last Friday from deep in the pack.

After their special non-points event last Friday, the ESSO Mini-Stocks will be back in regular action this Friday. Abel Castelein holds a 66 point advantage over 2nd place Mitchell Brown heading into the last month of the season, followed by Rick Emberson, Kevin Hilborn, and Mark Thorne all close behind Brown for 2nd. Amazingly, Rick Emberson was able to get his familiar purple #86 back in action last Friday night in the Art Hill Memorial race, just 3 weeks after a spectacular rollover on the frontstretch at Ohsweken heavily damaged his machine.

In Friday Night Fun Stock action, Lee Hils has led the points for much of the season, but lately Karl Sault has been the man to beat, as the young driver from Dundas has won 2 of the last 3 features. Hils has kept the Sault #81 in sight, however, finishing 2nd to Sault in both of his recent wins, while winning a feature in between, and retains his lead in the standings.

Ohsweken Speedway's Friday Night Thunder resumes this Friday, August 8 when ESSO and Speedway Variety present the Lucas Oil 358 Modified Shootout Series and Twin-15's for the ESSO Thunder Stocks, plus the ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Friday Night Fun Stocks. Friday Night Thunder at Ohsweken offers affordable exciting family entertainment just a short drive away from most Mid-Western Ontario locations. Friday Night Thunder Adult General Admission is $10, while Seniors and Students are $8, and Kids age 12 and under are FREE!
