ANNUAL “ARROW EXPRESS - CANADIAN SPRINT CAR
NATIONALS” TO GO SEPTEMBER 18, 2010 |
For
Immediate Release – Ken Pelkie, OHSWEKEN
Speedway
Mark September 17 / 18, 2010 on your planning
calendar as the dust has settled on the 5th
Annual “Arrow Express – Canadian Sprint
Car Nationals”. Having become a truly
“National” event, the work on the 6th
annual edition has already begun.
CSCN event coordinator Ken Pelkie is pleased
to confirm that “the 6th annual Canadian
Sprint Car Nationals is scheduled to take
place once again at the Styres family owned
Ohsweken Speedway on Saturday, September 18,
2010”. Already one of the most anticipated
weekends of racing on the 360 sprint car
calendar, sponsorship is being sought to
expand the event to include a third day of
racing on Thursday, September 16th. “I am
also very pleased that Arrow Express has
renewed their commitment to the Saturday
program and will carry the title sponsorship
for the event at the fast three-eights mile
clay oval located on the Six Nations Reserve
just outside of Brantford, Ontario” Pelkie
stated in making the announcement.
After falling to the weatherman in 2007 and a
two week delay due to weather in 2008,
“Village Pizza; Village Café; and
Sit-N-Bull Construction” maintained their
commitment and were rewarded with a stellar
show in 2009. All will return to host “The
Night Before the Nationals” on Friday,
September 17, 2010. The Friday portion of the
weekend will once again feature the “Village
Pizza – Ohsweken Shootout” for the sixth
year along with a pair of 15 lap “A”
Main’s that will guarantee the winners a
position in the Saturday feature starting
grid. Also on the Friday night card will be
the fourth annual, Dave MacLeod Memorial –
Mr. Sprint Car Challenge” which has proved
to be a popular addition to the program since
2007.
Honouring the man who was a fixture on the
area sprint car circuit for many years, the
bracket style elimination has turned out to be
a favourite event with the fans and offers an
opportunity to identify with many of the
various series champions that they may not be
familiar with.
Seventy-seven of the finest 360 sprints in the
United States and Canada assembled in 2009 and
made a qualifying attempt for the fifth
running of the maturing event making it one of
the largest gatherings anywhere for the 360
sprints. Quickly becoming one of the premier
races on the North American sprint car
calendar, ASCS National Tour and former World
of Outlaw star Shane Stewart on board a Tim
Norman / Joe Gaerte creation etched his name
in the record book as the 5th winner of the
Nationals. Along with Steve Poirier (the only
two time winner) and Wayne Johnson, veteran
sprint standout Kenny Jacobs are the only
others to claim bragging rights as a winners
of the prestigious event.
“The Nationals continues to be our flagship
event” stated track promoter Glenn Styres.
“The support that the regional sprint series
from our area who sign on as affiliate
sanctioning bodies continue to give Ken and
his Nationals staff a tremendous amount of
cooperation and support. Affiliate sanctioning
has also expanded to western Canada now with
the addition of the ASCS Can/West series based
in Edmonton, Alberta joining us in 2009 and I
anticipate more next year. The crowd also
continues to grow each year and they are
treated to one of the best shows that you will
find anywhere. I still find it unbelievable
that this program can be showcased in our
backyard. The reception by both racers and
fans alike gives us the incentive to continue
to grow the Nationals into the annual premier
event at Ohsweken” Styres concluded.
Introduced in 2005, the sixth annual “Arrow
Express - Canadian Sprint Car Nationals”
will retain a one day format and is currently
under review to determine if any changes to
the racing format will be made. “I can tell
you that “Group Time Trials will be utilized
in 2010” stated Canadian Sprint Car
Nationals founder and Director of Competition
for the event Ken Pelkie. “We need to find a
way to speed up the qualifying process so as
to delay getting the cars on the track too
early in the evening which will give us a
better race track for the show, yet allowing
us time to get the program over at a
reasonable hour” Pelkie continued. “As in
the past, the time trials will once again set
the starting line-ups for the heat races but
heats will be run in the same groups which the
drivers qualify in. From there on we need to
do a lot of soul searching to make any
adjustments for the rest of the program. Be
assured that any move will be made in the
interest of keeping the show fast paced, yet
providing the ultimate fairness for the
competitors. We will continue to massage the
format until we get it a good as we can. Our
goal is to provide the most competitive racing
possible for our paying fans and small,
calculated moves will continue to be made to
what we now feel is a pretty good program.
With the track that we have to work with, we
feel that the fast guys will always have
enough time to get to the front under the
format that we are using but we need to give
everyone enough racing opportunity to make the
show. We just need to try to find the proper
formula to make for the best race. After all,
it is racing that the fans are paying to
see” Pelkie concluded.
In keeping with the initial goal of adding to
the purse each year and building the event
into the premier sprint car race in the
north-east, the “A” Main winner will
collect $10,000 for their efforts, up from
$5,000 in 2005 when the race was introduced.
Two more positions have been added to the
“A” Main starting line up making a total
now of 30 starters with the final position
collecting $700. The Saturday show will be a
“Sprint Only” event with no support class.
Make your plans now to join us at Ohsweken
Speedway on September 17 & 18, 2010 for
the “Arrow Express - Canadian Sprint Car
Nationals” weekend. More information will be
released in the coming months as event details
are finalized. |
