Blisters 45 Car Field For Summer Nationals Prelim
Victory |
by
Tommy Goudge (July 4, 2008) - The
largest sprint car field of the 2008 Ohsweken
Speedway season turned out for a historic
night as the inaugural ASCS Northern Summer
Nationals event took centre stage during Round
8 of Friday Night Thunder. When the dust
settled, Dustin Daggett had bested 44 other
sprint car drivers and found his way back to
Ohsweken's victory lane for a 5th time.
Ohsweken's regular Friday Night Thunder
classes also participated in the evening's
festivities, with Cody McPherson picking up
his 5th ESSO Thunder Stock feature of the
season, while Brent Hill garnered feature win
honours for a 2nd time this season in the ESSO
Mini-Stocks, and Lee Hils won his 3rd Friday
Night Fun Stock feature.
Fred Cade and Gary Fast paced the field to
green to start the 25 lap ASCS Northern Summer
Nationals preliminary feature, with Fast
taking the early lead. With 4 laps in the
books, Cade powered by Fast into the lead in
turns 3 and 4 and began to put some distance
between himself and the rest of the field.
Lapped traffic quickly became a factor in the
event, and it proved to be the undoing of Cade
as he spun in turn 3 after slight contact with
a lapped machine during the 8th lap. 2nd place
running Fast and 3rd place running Blake Breen
were collected in the aftermath, relegating
all 3 to the back of the pack for the restart,
and handing the lead to 4-time Ohsweken
feature winner Dustin Daggett. 1 lap later,
Ohio invader Darren Long suffered a steering
problem, which resulted in a pileup in turn 3.
With cleanup finished, the race went back
green again, and stayed that way to the end,
as Daggett worked through heavy lapped traffic
at top speed, and cruised home to victory.
Mike Stelter came home with a strong 2nd place
finish, while young Scott Kruetter took 3rd,
followed by Bobby Breen all the way up from
20th on the grid, and Ryan Grubaugh - who
started 18th - rounding out the top 5.
Daggett, Stelter, Kruetter, and Breen locked
themselves into Saturday night's feature by
virtue of their top 4 finish in Friday's
feature. Heat race victories went to Cade,
Stelter, Daggett, Ryan Hunsinger, and Kyle
Patrick, while Keith Dempster won the dash,
and Kevin Job and Bobby Breen won the 2
B-Mains.
In ESSO Thunder Stock action, Cody McPherson
extended his points lead by taking his 5th
feature win of the season. The young St.
Catharines driver guided his #777 through an
early melee involving Vince Fargnoli, Terry
Osmond, and Gord Bates, and drove into the
lead from his 8th place starting spot before
the race had reached the halfway point. Behind
McPherson, a fierce battle was waged between
Glenn Leinen and Brad Herron for 2nd place,
with Leinen eventually prevailing. Herron
settled for 3rd followed by Ryan Dinning, and
Lee Winger driving Brad Bacher's #3 machine
this week. Despite losing a wheel in his heat
race, last week's feature winner Brian
Pescetti was able to come home with an 8th
place finish after starting 17th in the
feature event. The hard charger of the night,
however, was Jeremy Bean who was making his
first visit to Ohsweken this season. Problems
prevented the Bean #37 from finishing in heat
race action, but when the checkered flag fell
in the feature, Bean had advanced 10 positions
from 16th on the grid to a 6th place finish.
Heat race victories went to McPherson and
Herron.
The ESSO Mini-Stocks division appeared to have
another new winner this week, but the #05 car
of Rick Robinson did not pass technical
inspection after the race, handing the victory
to Brent Hill for his 2nd feature win of the
season. While Robinson held court out front,
Hill held off a determined Mitchell Brown for
much of the 15 lap distance in what turned out
to be the race for the win, while points
leader Abel Castelein and 3rd place points man
Rick Emberson were never far behind. 14th
place starter Mike Evers charged through the
field to take home a 5th place finish, while
Steve Hess started 19th and raced all the way
to a 7th place finish. Heat race victories
went to Robinson and Castelein.
The Friday Night Fun Stocks division saw its
largest entry list ever this week as 10
drivers started the feature, scheduled for 25
laps. A wild race ensued when the green flag
dropped, and when the dust had settled, Lee
Hils was declared the winner. It was the 3rd
feature win of the season for Hils, and his
2nd in a row. In another first for the
division, ESSO Mini-Stock rookie competitor
Wyatt Van Wart competed in both the Fun Stock
and Mini-Stock division with the same car on
Friday night.
